Yuba Woman Sustains Major Accident Injuries

I’m Ed Smith, a Yuba City car accident lawyer. Recently, a woman from Yuba County, as well as one other individual, sustained major injuries in a multiple-vehicle auto accident that occurred in Lake County.

Accident Information

Authorities from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred on Highway 29 in Lake County close to the Nice-Lucerne cut-off a short distance north of the community of Lakeport. Officers said that the accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m.

A driver had reportedly been driving north in the southbound traffic lane of Highway 29 in a 2010 Honda Odyssey. While traveling in the incorrect lane, the Odyssey eventually crashed head-on into a southbound Honda Accord. Officers indicated that the Odyssey had been driven by Bonnie Adams, a 73-year-old woman from Plumas Lake close to Yuba City and that the Accord had been driven by a 20-year-old Oakland resident.

Injuries and Response

CHP officers sent emergency responders to the site of the accident after receiving calls notifying them that individuals had been injured in the collision. The two drivers were found with serious and injuries and were both taken by helicopter ambulance to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

According to a spokesperson from the hospital, Adams was reportedly in critical condition as of Tuesday, December 12, 2017. Adams was reportedly recovering and not in serious condition.

The accident is still under investigation, but preliminary CHP reports conclude that it appears that Adams was confused about which lane she was driving in. It was reported that alcohol and/or drugs were not suspected to have been factors involved in the accident.

Head-On Collisions

Head-on accidents are one of the most severe types of crashes. Unlike other types of collision, the force of impact from head-on accidents is transferred entirely into the vehicle, increasing the severity of force involved in the crash. While it is estimated that only around 2 percent of U.S. accidents are head-on, head-on crashes account for over 10 percent of accident fatalities.

Furthermore, almost all head-on crashes in which one or more vehicle is traveling at a speed of over 40 miles per hour involves a fatal or catastrophic injury.

Head-On Collision Injuries

The force of a head-on crash is known to cause certain types of traumatic injuries. Injuries commonly sustained in head-on collisions include traumatic brain injuries, chest area injuries, spinal column damage, bone fractures in the ribs, cardiac contusions, injuries to the lungs, and more.

These types of injuries tend to be severe and can leave people with chronic issues such as disabilities and pain that can affect many different areas of their lives.
