Yolo County Man Dead After Intersection Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento wrongful death lawyer. An August 9 car crash near Interstate 505 cost the life of a man from Yolo County when his vehicle collided with another at an intersection in the countryside. According to a representative of the California Highway Patrol, alcohol consumption was probably not a factor in this accident. The incident remains under investigation by the CHP as to cause.

What Happened

The crash occurred at about 6:00 in the evening where County Road 87 and 14 meet, just west of the highway. A woman from Yuba City, age 42 and driving a Nissan, was traveling east on CR 14 and a man from Madison, 29, driving an older Toyota, was approaching the intersection with CR 14 on CR 87. Apparently, both drivers attempted to pass through the intersection simultaneously. At this point, the woman’s Nissan hit the Toyota on its left side.

Accident Results

The drivers of both vehicles were taken by an ambulance to the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vacaville. The man who was in the Toyota was declared dead, and the other driver was described as having suffered injuries that were moderate. The names of those involved in the collision has not been released.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who passed away. We send our thoughts to the injured driver for a full and speedy recovery.

Rural Accidents

In statistics of rural versus urban accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013, 53 percent of fatalities from crashes occurred in rural areas versus 47 percent in urban areas. Almost 16,000 people died on rural roads that year. Fifty-two percent of those fatalities occurred during daylight hours. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported that those in large trucks or riding in passengers in motor vehicles died on rural roads in 2015 at a higher proportion than in urban areas.

Reasons for Rural Accidents

Reasons attributed to rural accidents include speeding. More drivers on rural roads were driving drunk as compared to urban drivers at 53 percent in rural areas compared to 47 percent in urban areas. The biggest difference was in the number of people who wore seat belts. While there was only a 2-percent difference in the number of drivers in rural and urban areas who wore seat belts, the difference was striking when it came to passengers. Sixty-two percent of passengers in rural areas who were killed in fatal crashes were not wearing seat belts. In urban areas, 38 percent were not belted in.

Road Safety at Rural Intersections

Intersection safety on rural roads is of major focus by the Federal Highway Administration because it encompasses over 3 million miles of roads that are maintained by cities, towns and counties around the country, and over 80 percent of those intersections do not utilize any type of signage to improve safety. Because of the complicated nature of an injury or death caused on a rural road or at a rural intersection, consultation with a personal injury lawyer experienced in these types of accidents is a good start to obtaining compensation for the accident injury or wrongful death of a loved one.
