Wrong-Way Driver Causes Injury Accident Near Redding

I’m Ed Smith, a Redding personal injury lawyer. An auto accident involving a wrong-way driver occurred south of Redding on the morning of Wednesday, February 14, 2018. The accident, unfortunately, resulted in major injuries to one party.

Accident Details

According to a report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an auto accident occurred along Interstate 5 in the vicinity of Bowman Road at approximately 6:00 am. Officials reported that a 2006 Honda Accord driven by a 38-year-old McKinleyville resident entered the freeway from the northbound off-ramp at Balls Ferry Road and continued traveling in the opposing lanes of travel at speeds close to 100 miles per hour. The woman had been reportedly driving southbound along the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 moments before colliding with an oncoming 2004 Hyundai Tiburon driven by a 33-year-old Cottonwood resident. The impact of the collision caused serious damage to both involved vehicles.

Emergency Response

When officers arrived at the scene of the auto accident, they found that the driver of the Hyundai suffered a femur fracture. The Hyundai driver was transported to the Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment.

Hit-and-Run Suspect Arrested

The driver of the Honda allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot with her dog. However, police were able to apprehend the suspect in a nearby field. The Honda driver’s dog was taken into custody by animal control officers. The Honda driver was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and hit-and-run. Before being booked into jail, the suspect complained of pain in her knees and nose. The suspect was taken to the Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff for treatment. After being discharged from hospitalization, the suspect was released into the custody of law enforcement.

DUI and Fatalities

Drinking and driving can result in fatal consequences. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that approximately 35,000 fatal auto accidents occur in the United States every year. Nearly one-third of these accidents were reportedly caused by drivers who were found under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

When drivers are found to have been operating their vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of a collision, they are considered negligent under California state law. This means that DUI drivers can be held financially responsible for all incurred injuries and damages that their reckless behavior causes.

Similar Area Accident

An auto accident involving a wrong-way driver occurred near Anderson on January 7, 2018. A 29-year-old man from Medford, Oregon was on his way to an interview at a hospital in Sacramento. The man was driving along Interstate 5 when his vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver. The impact of the collision, sadly, caused the Medford man to succumb to his injuries. The wrong-way driver, a 28-year-old Red Bluff woman, was charged with second-degree murder as well as three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism, all related to the accident.
