California Ranks as Worst State

A new study confirmed that the State of California is the worst state, in the nation for drivers. This ranking is based upon the annual costs of driving in the state.

The Cost of Driving

American drivers spend an average of 17,600 hours (equivalent to 12 full days) each year behind the wheel of their cars. According to AAA report, the average price for owning and driving a motor vehicle is currently about $8,558 per year.

California Driving Costs

Taking into consideration several factors such as commute time, vehicle theft, annual fuel costs and deaths in relation to miles driven, a new study by Bankrate.com, ranked California as not being a state beneficial to drivers. The study ranked all the states based upon the costs of driving in each. The following gives an indication of the average cost of owning and operating a motor vehicle in the state of California:

  • Average annual automobile insurance: $895
  • Average annual fuel cost: $1,260
  • Average automobile repair cost: $435
  • Average time for commute: 28.9 minutes
  • Vehicle thefts per 100,000 people: 436.8
  • Vehicular casualties per 100 miles driven: 0.9

Nevada and New Mexico joined California in the bottom ranks, while Maine and Ohio rated the best states in which to drive. There could also be a link between the number of accidents each year and the cost of automobile insurance for the state.

California Traffic Safety Statistics
