Woodland DUI Dangers

I’m Ed Smith, a Woodland personal injury lawyer. Woodland, like most cities, is the site of numerous auto accidents caused by drunk or otherwise impaired drivers every year. Those who frequently drive in Woodland may be interested in knowing the following statistics regarding Woodland DUI accidents.

DUI Overview

During the time period spanning from the beginning of 2009 until the end of 2016, a total of 113 injury auto accidents primarily caused by intoxicated drivers occurred in Woodland. Of these 113 collisions, 24 occurred on a state-operated stretch of highway within city limits. Also, 24 involved motorcycles, 8 involved bicycles, and 14 involved pedestrians. The remaining 67 accidents involved either regular passenger vehicles or tractor-trailersA few locations in Woodland have more frequently been the site of injury-causing DUI accidents.

These locations include:

  • The intersection of East Street and Main Street
  • West Side Highway east of the County Road 102 intersection
  • The intersection of West Main Street and Cottonwood Street
  • Highway 113 between Main Street and Gibson Road
  • The intersection of Main Street and Pioneer Avenue

DUI Severity

DUI accidents in Woodland have been significantly more severe than non-DUI accidents. DUI collisions caused 10 Woodland fatalities during the time period in question, accounting for nearly 9 percent of all auto accidents. In contrast, only 1.5 percent of Woodland’s non-DUI collisions involved fatal injuries.

The percentage of severe and moderate injuries sustained in DUI accidents were both also significantly higher than in non-DUI accidents. This data indicates that when auto accidents involve alcohol, the risk of traumatic injuries is dramatically increased.

Common DUI Accident Type

The most common type of Woodland DUI accident during 2009-2016 was hit-object accidents which accounted for about 25 percent of DUI crashes. Almost as common were rear-end collisions, which accounted for around 24 percent.

After these two, the most common accident types were broadside crashes at around 19 percent of total DUI incidents, vehicle/pedestrian accidents at nearly 12 percent, and sideswipe crashes at 7 percent. The most significant difference between these numbers and the numbers for crashes in which intoxicants were not a factor was that hit-object collisions accounted for only 10 percent of non-DUI auto accidents. This disparity indicates that hit-object accidents were about twice as likely when a driver was drunk or otherwise intoxicated.

Common Times

By far, the most common time for intoxicated drivers to cause accidents in Woodland was between 9:00 p.m. and midnight on Friday nights. This time period exceeded the next most common period, Tuesdays between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., by nearly double.

However, the most common days for these collisions to occur were not Fridays but Saturdays, during which 24 of the 113 crashes occurred.
