Woman Killed in Stockton Head-On Collision

A woman was killed, and four others were injured in a Stockton head-on collision on the afternoon of April 14, 2019. A 2014 Nissan was heading south on State Route 99 Frontage Road between Hogan Lane and East Harney Lane shortly before 2:00 p.m. As a northbound 2000 Chrysler approached the Nissan, the Nissan reportedly veered into the oncoming traffic lane and struck the Chrysler head-on. The collision resulted in four parties suffering minor to major injuries. Sadly, a woman riding in the Nissan suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Officials have identified her as 21-year-old Judith Herrera-Velazquez of Lodi. I would like to send my thoughts and prayers to those mourning the loss of their loved one during this difficult time.

Loved One Forever Remembered

Judith Herrera-Velazquez was a beloved member of her family. She was a mother, wife, sister, and daughter who will be forever remembered for her kind and loving soul. A GoFundMe page has been established by the loved ones of Ms. Herrera-Velazquez to ensure she receives a proper burial.

Common Injuries in a Stockton Head-On Collision

A head-on collision often involves extreme physical trauma. This can result in internal injuries, bone fractures, spinal cord damage, and traumatic brain injuries. These are often worsened if a person is ejected from the vehicle or trapped inside. If an individual is pinned inside the car or propelled into the road, this may cause crush injuries or rapid blood loss. In some extreme cases, such trauma can result in wrongful death.

Wrongful Death in an Auto Accident

No car ride should ever end in the death of a loved one. Compensation from a wrongful death claim can help provide a family with the financial resources needed to cover expenses related to the fatal car wreck. These include economic damages such as end-of-life medical bills, loss of future financial support for the household, lost inheritance, funeral and burial expenses, and loss of personal services. Noneconomic damages such as loss of consortium, deprivation of companionship, society, affection, and love, and pain and suffering may also be claimed.

How Long Do I Have to File a Wrongful Death Claim?

While the focus of a decedent’s family will be tending to other immediate needs, there are strict time limits for bringing a claim for wrongful death. In California, there is a two-year window to file a claim for a loved one’s wrongful death. If the incident involves government negligence such as a road defect, this deadline is drastically shortened to six months or 180 days from the time of loss. In a time of grief, it is essential to retain an attorney who strives to protect your interests and provides consistent support. To learn what to look for in an attorney, watch the below video.

A wrongful death car accident can occur in many ways. Some involve motorists who get distracted by their phones. In others, some may drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. It is also common to witness drivers failing to yield, running stop signs or red lights, speeding, making unsafe lane changes, and other dangerous driving behaviors. The cause of a car wreck can sometimes result from a mechanical issue in a car, such as defective vehicle equipment. A compassionate Stockton personal injury attorney who is experienced in wrongful death cases will know how to analyze the details and circumstances of the incident. This way, the attorney will determine liability and help provide a family with a stronger understanding of what happened in the crash and what their options are for recovery.
