Woman, Children Suffer Injuries in Clearlake Multi-Vehicle Crash

On Monday, October 5, 2020, one woman and two young children suffered injuries during a Clearlake multi-vehicle crash. The injured individuals were identified as a 33-year-old woman from Redwood Valley as well as a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old child. Updates on their conditions have not been reported, but California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that all three were hospitalized. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

Collision Information

The accident reportedly took place at about 5:55 p.m. on Highway 20 on the northern side of Clearlake. According to police, a 39-year-old man from Lucerne was driving in a 2002 Dodge pickup truck while heading east on the highway in the area of Reclamation Road. The driver reportedly encountered traffic ahead of him that had built up due to a prior accident.

As the Dodge approached the stopped traffic, officers say the driver hit his brakes but was unable to stop his vehicle in time. The Dodge crashed into the rear-end of a 2018 Kia Soul. The first crash pushed the Kia forward into a Honda Accord. The Accord was subsequently pushed over the median and into westbound lanes. As the Accord entered oncoming traffic, it was struck by an oncoming Ford Explorer. Following this crash, the Honda reportedly collided with a Chevrolet HHR.

Response

Emergency response officials were already nearby and quickly arrived at the crash scene. Medical officials discovered that all three occupants of the Kia had been severely injured. The woman was transported to the Lake County Hospital while the 3-year-old and 6-year-old were flown via helicopter to the Oakland Children’s Hospital and the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Details about the nature of their injuries were unavailable.

CHP indicated that the Dodge, Chevrolet, and Honda drivers were uninjured during the accident. The driver of the Explorer and her 1-year-old passenger were not reported to have been injured but were both hospitalized as a precaution.

Investigation

As officers conduct a full investigation into the accident, police have indicated that driver distraction may have played a role in the crash. However, car accidents can be complicated and very frequently involve more than one cause. Furthermore, many common crash factors, such as defective car parts, aren’t under driver control. If non-driver accident factors are involved in the accident, parties such as vehicle manufacturers or even government entities may be considered partially at fault.
