Winter Storm Causes Vacaville Freeway Fatality

Local California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers reported that a man lost his life in a vehicle accident during a winter storm on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. The collision took place shortly after sunrise and involved a big-rig and pedestrian. Officers have said that the crash was one incident of several that occurred on local freeways Wednesday morning. The fatally injured pedestrian has not yet been identified by authorities. Additionally, CHP says that they are still working to determine all of the factors involved in this crash. My sympathies are with the mourning loved ones of the person who passed away because of this tragic incident.

Crash Details

Police reports say that the crash happened just before 7:00 a.m. on Highway Interstate 80 a short distance to the west of the Davis Street exit in Vacaville. The unidentified pedestrian had allegedly been walking in the slow lane of the eastbound side of the highway during a period of heavy rainfall. While he was walking, an eastbound tractor-trailer collided with him from behind. Further details about the circumstances of the crash have not been released.

Response

Police immediately responded to the accident. Medics at the scene of the crash found the pedestrian with critical injuries. Sadly, the man could not recover and lost his life at the crash scene. No other injuries were suffered during the incident according to officials. The slow lane of eastbound 80 was shut down while accident response was underway, causing major traffic delays for morning commuters. The lane was re-opened by 8:30 a.m.

Investigation

While an investigation is ongoing, police haven’t mentioned what factors they suspect caused the crash outside of rainy weather. Pedestrian accidents can be incredibly dangerous and are frequently caused by a variety of factors. These factors can include poor visibility, reckless driving behavior such as distracted driving, insufficient walking space on roads, speeding, and more.

Trucking Collisions

When large commercial trucks are involved in accidents, the results can often be severe. Because of their sheer size, big-rigs are likely to cause major damages even in low-speed accidents. The companies that own these trucks are well aware of these risks and are usually ready to respond to accidents right away. Typically, companies will send a quick-response team to the accident site in order to conduct their own investigations. This early action can make it more difficult for people to claim the payments they deserve for their losses.

For these reasons, it is important to contact a lawyer as soon as you can if you have been affected by a trucking collision. Your lawyer will be able to take statements from witnesses, investigate the truck’s maintenance records, and negotiate with insurers to make sure you are justly compensated.
