What is a Buckle Fracture?

What is a Buckle Fracture? Broken bones are some of the most common traumatic injuries that people suffer. Broken bones are more common in the elderly, particularly those who suffer from osteoporosis, and children, who are prone to having injuries while playing. On the other hand, there are other traumatic accidents that could lead to fractures as well. Some of these include auto accidents, bicycle accidents, and motorcycle accidents. Some of the statistics on bone fractures include:

  • A wrist fracture is the most common type of bone fracture in individuals under the age of 75.
  • People who are over the age of 75 most commonly sustain hip fractures.
  • Of all musculoskeletal injuries in the United States annually, about one out of every six is a bone fracture.
  • More than 6 million bone fractures occur every year in the United States.

An Overview of Classes of Bone Fractures

There are many different types of bone fractures that someone could sustain. It is important to categorize these bone fractures properly because it changes how these fractures are managed. Some of these types include:

Open Fracture: An open fracture means that one or more of the bone fragments is protruding through the skin.

Comminuted Fracture: A comminuted fracture means that the bone has been shattered, or broken into many pieces.

Displaced Fracture: If a fracture has been displaced, it means that the bones are not in their proper anatomical alignment.

Many of these fractures will require surgery to repair. One common type of fracture is called a buckle fracture.

The Buckle Fracture

A buckle fracture-also known as an incomplete fracture is commonly seen in children; however, it can occur at any age. When someone sustains a buckle fracture, the most common mechanism is a fall on an outstretched hand. On an x-ray, the scan will show a slight bend or change in the angle of the bone. For the most part, these fractures will not require surgery; however, if the fracture is displaced or if a fragment has damaged an artery or nerve, this could lead to significant complications. Some of these complications could require a trip to an operating room. For this reason, urgent evaluation by a trained medical professional is needed.
