West Sacramento Traffic Crash Involves Out-of-Control Vehicle

Accident along U.S. 50 Occurs When Driver Hits Cement Wall

The driver of a Nissan Maxima was injured in a West Sacramento traffic crash on July 10 when their vehicle went out of control along westbound U.S. 50. The collision occurred near the eastbound Cap City Freeway connector around 4:21 p.m. According to the accident report issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver’s vehicle struck a cement wall and went off the roadway into a ditch on the right-hand side of the highway.

Injured Driver Taken to UC Davis Following Traffic Crash

Yolo Fire Department first responders arrived at the scene to determine the driver had suffered multiple injuries. The driver was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment, and the vehicle was towed from the scene. Investigators with the CHP are determining what happened to cause the accident and to assign fault.

Why Do Drivers Lose Control of Their Vehicle?

Losing control of a vehicle can result in life-threatening injuries. In general, maintaining control of one’s vehicle is essential in preventing a traffic crash. Some of the most common reasons for losing control of a vehicle are:

  • Speeding: Driving above the speed limit, especially around curves, is one way to lose control. Once lost, the speed makes it harder to recover.
  • Slick roads: Rainy roads can make it easier to lose control and be involved in a traffic crash. A driver is expected to adapt to inclement weather and take necessary precautions in rainy weather.
  • Poor road conditions: Potholes and other road conditions can cause the vehicle to be less controllable. If the agency in charge of road maintenance was aware of problems with the condition of the road and ignored it, they may be liable for the traffic crash. When a claim is made against the city or state, the timeline to file is shorter at six months than other personal injury claims. Your car accident attorney will be able to ensure that documents are filed on time. If the deadline is not met, the case will not go forward.
  • Defective auto parts: When a defective part causes a collision, a lawsuit against the manufacturer can be filed. The defects can include brake failure or tire blowout.

Maintaining Control of Your Vehicle

There are ways to protect yourself from a traffic crash if a vehicle goes out of control. In the first place, stay far enough away from the car in front of you. Keep an eye out for motorists who are speeding or acting aggressively. Never take your eyes off the road, and be careful at highway exits and entrances.

Ways to Regain Control

There are a few things you can do if your vehicle goes out of control:

  • Identify where you want to go, and turn the steering wheel in that direction.
  • If there is a curve ahead, slow down.
  • Use firm, moderate downward pressure on the brake pedal if they are antilock – don’t pump them.
  • When the gas pedal sticks, put the car in neutral and use the brakes.
