What Happened?

Firefighters responded to the area of Wheatley Avenue, near Briggs Avenue at about 2:45 p.m on Monday, September 12, 2016, after a battalion chief for the Modesto Fire Department noticed smoke in the area.

Several Structures Threatened By Flames

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found several outbuildings, a barn, studio apartment, sheds, and other small buildings used to store belongings and a power pole either on fire or in direct threat of being damaged by the flames.

Concerned Residents Took to Social Media

Local residents took to social media to ask about the large plume of smoke that could be seen from downtown Modesto. Many were concerned of the possibility of the flames erupting into a large wildfire.

Many Localities Helped to Battle Blaze

Fire crews from Modesto, Woodland, Burbank-Paradise, Salida, Stanislaus Consolidated, Westport, and Ceres worked quickly to stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes. Firefighters remained on scene late into the afternoon.

Did Anyone Get Hurt?

Yes. A man suffered burn injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Some Residents Upset

Some residents were upset after losing various possessions in and around the fire’s path. It is also being reported that many dogs and cats that were on the burning property at the time have left the area and are lost in the community. Understandably, the residents are upset, concerned and would like to get to the bottom of how the fire originated.
