Broadway Corridor Work Progressing to Make Area Safer

A road construction project was announced by the City of Sacramento beginning August 9 and is expected to last for about a week. According to the report, the Public Works road construction project is slated to begin along 2nd Avenue between Broadway and 34th Street. The road closure is part of the 2017 Envision Broadway in Oak Park Plan, which is intended to improve future mobility on the Broadway corridor from Martin Luther King Jr. to Franklin Boulevard.

Traffic Accidents Are the Cause of the Rebuild

Data analysis and communication with the community in the area showed a high number of traffic accidents occurring at 2nd Avenue and 34th Street, which led to the call for permanent closure in one area to protect bicyclists and pedestrians. In 2019, a temporary closure of the area was set up to test a new design meant to reduce the number of traffic accidents and receive feedback from the community while still allowing bicyclists to travel through. The feedback showed that members of the community felt safer traveling in the area without the presence of motor vehicles.

Motor Vehicle Traffic Rerouted in 2nd Avenue Area

The City Council in Sacramento approved the Oak Park Plan in March 2020. Only recently did the city receive the funding to begin the next phase of road construction, and the environmental review and initial design are slated for next year. The ongoing road construction redesign scheduled for this week is hoped to improve mobility and safety. Although the area along 2nd Avenue will be shut down to motor vehicles between Broadway and 34th Street, it remains open for bicycle riders and pedestrians.

Routes for Travelers in the Area

During the road construction, motorists traveling along westbound 2nd Avenue can turn left on 35th Street to reach Broadway heading northeast. Those traveling east on 2nd Avenue can either turn right on Broadway or access 33rd Street to make a left onto Broadway. Only right turns are permitted from 2nd Avenue to 34th Street.

Bicycle Riders and Pedestrians

The 2nd Avenue rebuild allows bicyclists to travel safely across Broadway through the closure area with breaks in the median to allow safe passage. Pedestrians can continue using the 35th and Broadway crosswalks. The new 2nd Avenue closed crossing area offers pedestrians additional safety without the presence of motor vehicles.

Accidents, Injuries and Fatalities

Some areas are dangerous because of the high number of traffic accidents that involve not only motor vehicles but pedestrians, bicycle riders and others. In some cases, the design of the roadway or traffic management contributes to the problem. Those injured by an at-fault driver, negligent government entity, or other causes can file a claim. Accidents can result in serious injuries or even fatalities.
