How Minor Injuries in an Accident Can Hide Symptoms of Serious Trauma

In the aftermath of a car accident, it’s not uncommon for people to feel shaken and confused. The adrenaline of the event can mask any physical pain or discomfort that may have been sustained in the collision. Unfortunately, this means that some minor injuries can be overlooked or ignored in the moment, but they could indicate more serious trauma.

Delayed Symptoms Following a Traffic Accident

It is therefore important to pay attention to your body and monitor how you are feeling after an accident. Even if you don’t experience immediate pain at the scene of the crash, mild symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea or fatigue could be indicative of delayed onset traumatic brain injury (TBI), whiplash or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is important to note that, in some cases, these symptoms may not show up until days or weeks after the accident. Additional symptoms that may mean you’ve suffered a serious injury include:

  • Pain and severe bruising in the abdomen: Problems in the abdomen may indicate internal bleeding or damage to an organ. These injuries can be life-threatening, and medical care should be sought right away.
  • Back pain, stiffness and difficulty moving: These symptoms may indicate a back injury from strained muscles and ligaments to a herniated disc. Untreated, these conditions can worsen and affect the injured party’s quality of life.

Always Seek Medical Help After a Traffic Collision

If you are involved in a traffic accident, it is always best to get checked out by a medical professional as soon as possible. Even if you don’t feel any pain or discomfort immediately after the crash, it’s important to have your injuries evaluated and treated. This will ensure that any hidden trauma is detected and addressed promptly, preventing potential long-term damage from developing down the line.

Documenting Your Injuries

Be sure to document any minor injuries, such as cuts and scrapes. These can indicate more serious internal trauma that would otherwise remain undetected. It is also beneficial to keep a journal of any physical or emotional changes you experience following the accident, as this can be helpful in court if needed.

Remember, even minor injuries sustained in an accident can have serious implications for your health and well-being. Be sure to stay alert for symptoms of hidden trauma, and seek medical treatment at the earliest opportunity to ensure that all injuries are properly addressed.
