Vallejo in the Spotlight

Vallejo in the Spotlight – Vallejo is the most diverse and largest city in Solano County. Located about 30 miles north of San Francisco, it is the 10th most populated city in the Bay Area. It is home to the popular amusement park, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and the now-defunct Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

Vallejo’s population was nearly 116,000 at the 2010 census. With such close proximity to major metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Sacramento, the city is seeing an expanding economy and a growing population.

History of Vallejo

Vallejo was once home to several Native American tribes including the Suisunes, Coastal Miwoks and Patwin. Archaeologists have confirmed that the three Indian sites were located on Sulphur Springs Mountain.

The city’s history dates back to the early 1800s. Named after Mexican military General Mariano G. Vallejo, the city served as the state capitol not once but twice – briefly in 1852 and again in 1853. Unfortunately, the city didn’t follow through with building a state capitol for the legislature to meet, and they motioned to move the meetings to Sacramento where it remained ever since.

After legislature left, Vallejo grew into an important shipping and naval center. Mare Island Naval Shipyard, established in 1854, was the West Coast’s first shipyard. It was in operation for over a hundred years before it finally shut down in 1996.

Today, Mare island stands ready to become a commercial, residential and industrial centerpiece for the city into the next era.

Vallejo’s Economy

Vallejo’s strong economy and affordable housing have brought success for the city as new residents and businesses come to the region. While some are drawn to the business fronts and beautifully restored Victorian homes, others are attracted to the more modern developments.

The redevelopment of Mare Island and Waterfront has become a community effort of residents’ input on what would be considered the most essential economic producer of the city.

Vallejo’s Status

The City of Vallejo has been the motherland of many influential people of the past and present, and its breathtaking landscape has been an inspiration for various pop culture. It has undergone great periods of political and military influence, which is the leading contributor to its large and diverse population.
