Vallejo Crash Kills Man

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo personal injury lawyer. On Saturday, May 20, 2017, a solo vehicle accident in Vallejo resulted in the death of a 56-year-old Vallejo resident.

Accident Details

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred at about 6:30 a.m.  on the westbound section of highway Interstate 80 just before the entrance to the Carquinez Bridge. CHP indicated that the man had been driving a 1999 Honda toward the bridge when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the impact safety barrier outside of one of the bridge’s toll booths.

According to CHP, after the vehicle collided with the impact barrier, it struck a concrete wall on the edge of the tolling station as well as a chain link barrier on the southern side of the westbound lane. The vehicle ultimately came to rest in the parking lot of the toll plaza, CHP said. Witnesses of the accident were the first to respond and found the driver unconscious in the driver’s seat of the vehicle with his seatbelt securely fastened.

Emergency Response and Injuries

When emergency medical officials reached the scene of the accident, they determined that the driver had sustained critical injuries and transported him to the nearby Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center where he was placed in an intensive care unit for treatment. Tragically, the man’s injuries were too severe and the man was declared deceased at 7:06 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to information from the county coroner’s office.

We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this crash.

Causal Factors

The reason or reasons that caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle are not known. CHP currently has this incident under investigation and is trying to determine the causal factors. Possible factors include driving while fatigued, faulty vehicle parts, defects in the roadway, and more. The CHP has not stated whether or not they believe alcohol to have played a part in the accident.

Vallejo Statistics

California’s Office of Traffic Safety has released statistics indicating that, in recent years, there have been about 504 accidents that involve injury and/or death in the city of Vallejo. Of these accidents, about 8-10 percent have involved the use of alcohol. Additionally, around 14 percent of these accidents have involved pedestrians. We encourage all residents of Vallejo to remain alert while driving and pay attention when walking in or near the city’s roadways in order to avoid accidents that have the ability to cause either traumatic injuries or death.
