Vacaville Train Fatality

Man Killed in Train Accident

On Tuesday, July 11, a man from Sacramento lost his life after being struck by a passing Amtrak train in Vacaville. The available information regarding this incident can be read in the below article.

Accident Details

The accident reportedly occurred at about 11:25 p.m. as the train was crossing Fry Road in the Elmira area just outside of Vacaville. According to officials at the Solano County Coroner’s Office, the deceased was identified as Boylon Nesby, a 35-year-old resident of Sacramento.

Response

After the collision was reported, the Vacaville Fire Department (VFD) responded to the incident. VFD found the body of a pedestrian on Fry Road near the intersection of Meridian Road, according to Solano County Sheriff Department’s Sgt. Raymond Lamb. Lamb told reporters that the man was pronounced dead at 11:34 p.m. and that an autopsy was scheduled for July 12, 2017, so that more could be learned about the circumstances of the collision.

The Train

According to Amtrak spokesperson Vernae Graham, the man was struck by an Amtrak Coast Starlight train that had been headed north on Union Pacific tracks. The train had reportedly been carrying 279 passengers and was on its way to Seattle from Los Angeles.

The accident delayed the Amtrak train for three hours and 45 minutes, but none of the people on board sustained any injuries.

Causal Factors

Not much has been reported so far about why this accident happened. Investigators are currently working to determine if safety hazards such as improperly marked rails had anything to do with this tragedy. The Solano County Coroner is also conducting toxicology tests to determine if the man was under the influence of any mind altering substances.

Another Recent Train Fatality

This accident occurred less than a week after a woman from Lancaster died after her parked car was struck by an Amtrak train at about 5 a.m. in Dixon near the intersection of Porter and Pitt School roads.

The woman’s car was knocked almost 200 feet away from the site of the collision and soon thereafter became engulfed by fire. Investigating officers noted that the woman’s car had been parked in the middle of the tracks and that the safety arms at the intersection of the tracks and the roadway were down at the time of the collision.

Train Crashes

Trains are extremely large and travel at high speeds. Because of this, collisions can often have extreme consequences. Common causes of train collisions include drivers whose vehicles become stuck at crossings because of faulty gates or signals, drivers or pedestrians who become confused at railroad crossings, trains experiencing braking failure, and more.
