Vacaville DUI Causes Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a Vacaville car accident lawyer. In Vacaville, on Friday, February 24, 2017, a driver crashed their vehicle into an apartment building, damaging the property and totaling their vehicle.

Accident Details

The accident occurred just around 8:30 p.m. at an unreported location in Vacaville. The driver of the car, a male resident of Vacaville, reportedly drove his vehicle off of the roadway and through a fence on the outside of the property before colliding head-on with the stairway of an apartment building. The vehicle that the man had been driving was reported to be a black Toyota truck.

Police Response

The Vacaville Police Department responded to the incident after they were called by residents of the apartment building. When the officers arrived at the scene of the collision, they found that nobody had been injured and promptly arrested the driver of the truck on charges of driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle was totalled by the collision and required towing services to be removed from the site of the accident.

Drunk Driving Statistics

Incidents such as this, that occur as the result of a driver operating their vehicle under the influence of intoxicating substances, are the result of nearly one-third of all traffic-related fatalities across the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that every day 28 people in the United States die in vehicle collisions involving drunk drivers and that, although drunk driving deaths have decreased by a third over the last thirty years, there is still a one-in-three chance of being involved in an alcohol-related collision during one’s lifetime. Furthermore, the NHTSA estimates that the total costs of alcohol-related damages in the U.S. total about 52 billion dollars every year.

Effects of Alcohol

As the amount of alcohol in one’s body rises, the negative effects that it has on the central nervous system also increase. Alcohol is absorbed through the walls of the small intestine and stomach, then passes into the bloodstream where it is eventually metabolized through the liver. Once in the bloodstream, alcohol can reduce a driver’s ability to react to the changing conditions of roadways. And, at high enough concentrations, can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles completely.

Fault and Drunk Driving

In the state of California, any driver who is involved in an accident and is also found to be guilty of driving under the influence is considered to have been driving negligently. This means that, by law, they can be held liable to pay for damages incurred as a result of the accident.
