UC Davis Professor Fatally Injured In Yolo County Bicycle Accident

UC Davis Professor Emeritus Fatally Injured In Yolo County Bicycle Accident

On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, one person tragically lost her life after being injured in a Yolo County bicycle accident. The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office has identified the decedent as Marilyn Olmstead, a 77-year-old professor emeritus of chemistry at UC Davis. California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the accident involved a single vehicle and happened in rural Yolo County north of Davis.

Crash Information

According to officers from CHP, the accident happened at around 10:05 a.m. on County Road 100A. Olmstead was reportedly riding her bicycle on a private road when she crossed over onto CR 100A. As she entered the roadway, her bicycle traveled into the path of an oncoming vehicle. Police indicated that the driver of the vehicle hit his brakes and attempted to veer to the left in order to avoid a collision, but was unable to steer away from the bike.

After they received a report about the crash, CHP sent emergency officials to the location. When they reached the scene, medics found that Olmstead had received serious injuries. Sadly, she was pronounced deceased on-scene. None of the vehicle occupants sustained injuries during the incident.

Investigation

CHP has indicated that they are conducting a full investigation into the possible causes of this accident. So far, investigators have not yet stated what factors they suspect could have been involved. Furthermore, bicycle accidents like this one can be more complicated than they seem and may involve multiple causal factors. Many of these factors are things that neither the cyclists nor the driver has any ability to control, such as a defective bike or car parts and roadway issues.

Fatal collisions such as this one can be challenging for investigators. This is mainly because investigators are unable to interview the decedent about what took place. Unfortunately, this can mean that police will not fully understand the crash and may fail to uncover important evidence that could have a major impact on a family’s ability to obtain fair compensation. For this reason, it’s critical to reach out to an attorney who knows how to privately investigate fatal collisions.
