Uber Safety: Tips and Technological Features

Uber has become a popular way for people to travel from place to place and Uber safety remains paramount. There are numerous benefits of using Uber, including:

  • Uber is tied to a credit card, ensuring that riders receive competitive rates and drivers are always compensated
  • Uber has led to lower rates of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Overall, the cost of using Uber is frequently more economical than that of a typical taxi

Unfortunately, tragedies can still occur while using Uber. Recently, an article was published regarding a local college student who was murdered. She had mistakenly gotten into a car that she thought was her Uber. A few hours later, her body was found in a field almost 100 miles away from where she was abducted. This kind of tragedy should never occur. There are a few safety tips that everyone should keep in mind.

Safety Tips While Using Uber

While using Uber, there are several easy safety measures that riders can employ to stay safe. Some of these include:

  • Always request the ride while standing inside to minimize the amount of time spent standing on the street as a pedestrian
  • Make sure to read the license plate of the car that is picking you up. It should match what your app reads.
  • Ask the driver for his or her name before getting into the vehicle. Verify that it matches what the app says.
  • Share the trip information with family members and friends so that people know where you are
  • Take steps to protect your personal information

These easy measures will minimize the chances of a tragedy occurring. Fortunately, Uber has also installed safety measures into its app.

Safety Features of the Uber App

Uber safety should always be the top priority. With this goal in mind, there are several safety features of the Uber app of which riders should be aware. Some of these include:

  • There is a blue shield in the Uber app that allows users to easily share their trip information with trusted contacts
  • Uber has installed an emergency assistance button in their app that will alert emergency dispatchers to the rider’s location
  • Uber has installed technology in its app to mask the phone number and personal information of riders to safeguard their privacy

Despite everyone’s efforts, serious accidents can still occur. If this happens while using Uber, what kind of resources are available?
