Two Teenagers Hurt in Fiery Truckee Area Crash

On Thursday, September 3, 2020, a 15-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl sustained severe injuries during a Truckee area crash. The collision occurred late at night and involved one vehicle. California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the accident caused the vehicle to catch fire, but that responders were able to remove the occupants before they suffered fatal injuries. Updates on the conditions of the injured parties have not been reported.

Crash Details

The accident happened just prior to 11:30 p.m. on Highway Interstate 80 in the area of Donner Pass. The two were traveling in a Maserati sports car heading east on the highway. According to police, the teenage boy was driving at the time. For undetermined reasons, the teenager lost control of the vehicle just before approaching the exit for Donner Pass Road and collided with the guardrail on the side of the highway. The impact caused the guardrail to penetrate the vehicle through its right-front passenger door. Police indicated that, at this point, the vehicle quickly began to burn.

Response

Both teenagers were reportedly able to extricate themselves from the burning vehicle and were on the side of the road when an off-duty police officer from Redwood city noticed them. The officer stopped and rushed over to assist the couple, dragging the girl away from the car as the fire grew more intense, eventually entirely consuming the vehicle.

When medical responders reached the scene, they determined that the two teenagers had suffered severe burn injuries and called for a helicopter ambulance. Both individuals were flown to the UC Davis Medical Center for emergency care.

Investigation into the Accident

As CHP investigates the incident, officers have indicated that they do not believe driver intoxication was a factor. Furthermore, vehicle accidents can have multiple causal factors, even if the crash only involves one car. Many of the most common accident factors are non-driver issues such as defective car parts or roads with inadequate signage.

Burn Injuries

Burn injuries have the potential to be very serious and can have a huge impact on the lives of accident survivors. Because these injuries are so destructive, the healing process can take a long time and many people are left with permanent issues like chronic pain, scarring, limited mobility, and more.

While these issues can feel overwhelming, there are many treatment options available for burn survivors, including reconstructive surgeries, physical therapy, medications, and more. While the recovery period can be difficult and may require extensive treatment, many people are able to regain their health and move on with their lives.

Calling An Attorney

Sadly, the medical care necessary for burn injuries can be very expensive. Fortunately, it is often possible for accident survivors to hold negligent parties and/or insurance companies fully or partially responsible for damages. To better understand what compensation may be available to you, it’s always best to get personal advice from a qualified expert attorney.
