Two People Injured in Mendocino County Crash near Garberville

Two people were hurt during a Mendocino county crash near the city of Garberville on Saturday, June 14, 2020. Reports from California Highway Patrol (CHP) said that the accident involved only one passenger vehicle and happened on Highway 101 in the early afternoon. The injured parties included a 23-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man. The woman reportedly suffered severe trauma during the incident.

Crash Information

The accident occurred at around 1:34 p.m. on Highway 1010 near the Sprowl Creek exit in northern Mendocino County. The young woman had been driving a white-colored Acura MDX southbound on the highway. For reasons that are not currently known, the vehicle suddenly veered toward the edge of the highway, eventually running off-road and striking a metal guard rail. The Acura went through the guardrail and rolled down a steep embankment on the side of the highway, causing extreme damage to the car.

Response

Emergency response crews reaching the accident site discovered that both the driver and passenger of the Acura were hurt during the incident. The woman was determined to have sustained severe injuries and was transported to the St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka via Reach helicopter ambulance. The passenger was driven to the Jerold Phelps Hospital in Garberville for treatment of what were reportedly non-severe injuries.

Investigation

Officers of CHP have indicated that an investigation into the causes of this accident is ongoing. So far, police have only stated that they don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash. Even if an accident only involves one vehicle, it can still be caused by multiple factors, and many common crash causes are things drivers have no ability to control, such as defective roads or malfunctioning vehicle parts.

Rollover Accidents

When a car overturns, it almost always puts a major amount of strain on the vehicle’s roof. In this situation, the vehicle roof needs to be strong enough to maintain integrity. Otherwise, the roof may cave in and intrude into the cabin, possibly leaving drivers and/or passengers with very serious injuries. In injury cases, these are usually referred to as “roof crush injuries.”

In cases that involve roof crush injuries, the company that manufactured the vehicle is often considered an at-fault party, and survivors are able to hold them responsible for damages. This is because auto companies are required to ensure the safety of the vehicles they make. By filing a claim to hold these companies accountable, injured people are often able to obtain the payments they need for medical bills as well as other damages like lost wages, personal suffering, and more.
