Two People Hospitalized in Head-On Collision on Elk Grove Florin Road

A head-on collision in Vineyard on September 24 caused four injuries, with two people being transported to a hospital for treatment. The crash happened on Elk Grove Florin Road near Tiogawoods Drive when the two vehicles crashed head-on for unknown reasons. Medics with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District treated two people at the scene, who were then released.

Authorities Determining Cause of Head-On Collision

The other two injured parties were transported to a hospital in unknown condition. Authorities are investigating the accident to determine fault and how it occurred.

Increase in Injury Severity in a Head-On Collision

Suffering an injury in a head-on crash often results in severe trauma, even at lower speeds. This happens because the vehicles’ speeds combine when they impact. For example, if both vehicles are traveling at 30 mph, the impact will be at 60 mph. Those inside both vehicles are thrown forward, where they can crash into the dash, steering wheel, or interior of the car. Common injuries in a head-on crash include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries may range from concussion to life-threatening trauma.
  • Spinal cord damage may result in temporary or permanent paralysis.
  • The risk of bone fractures can increase in number and severity.
  • Cervical strain or sprain occurs commonly in this type of accident because of the rapid back and forth movement of the head.
  • Internal injuries can result from striking the interior of the car or from the seat belt or airbag deployment.
  • Back trauma, such as a ruptured disc, can be caused by a head-on collision, which can cause serious pain and disability.
  • Chest trauma can be caused by contact with the interior of the vehicle, airbags or seat belts, which can include fractured ribs, lung and heart damage.

Contacting a Personal Injury Lawyer

Because trauma in a motor vehicle accident can be serious and require extended hospitalization, a loss of income as well as pain and suffering, by contacting a personal injury lawyer, you may be able to recover damages. A personal injury lawsuit may recover:

  • Medical costs that arise as a result of your accident are recoverable. From ambulance and hospitalization costs to doctors’ bills, medication, surgeries and other treatments, the at-fault party in your accident can be held responsible. Future expenses can be factored in if necessary.
  • Since the individual is injured, they probably can’t work, which means lost wages. Although some people take what vacation time they have or sick leave, those can be reimbursed, along with their wages and other perks of their job. If they can’t return to their former job and have to take a pay cut, the difference is factored into the settlement. If permanent disability occurs, wages are recoverable until retirement age.
  • Pain and suffering is recoverable, including compensation for the physical trauma and emotional distress.
