Driver Going Wrong Way Causes Two-Vehicle Head-On Collision

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a woman, 37, was driving her Nissan Altima east along Dillard Road. At the same time, a man in a Nissan Rogue, age 27, was traveling west along Dillard. The two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, officials said.

Both drivers were killed, and a child was hospitalized. Officials have identified the drivers as 37-year-old Wilton resident Ashley Nichole Godinez and 27-year-old Ukiah resident Devin Ray Hendry.

Drunk Driving Not Yet Ruled Out in Fatal Accident

Alcohol consumption has not yet been ruled out as a factor in the fatal crash. The CHP traffic accident unit is conducting the investigation. The names of the deceased will not be released until the County Coroner’s Office has notified families.

Frontal Accidents Are Often Fatal

Car accidents that result in a head-on crash are among the most serious. The collision happens when one motorist crosses the center line or by wrong-way drivers. A head-on crash can often result in severe injuries or even death due to the force of the impact caused by the combined speed of the two vehicles. These types of accidents account for a relatively small percentage of car accidents but are often fatal. According to the Insurance Information Institute, in 2020, there were 3,631 head-on crashes, with 10.2 percent ending in a fatality.

Fatal Head-On Collisions – How It Affects a Family

Grief and disbelief are two overriding emotions families feel after a fatal head-on crash. In addition, the family experiences a loss of income. The combination, for most, is challenging and psychologically draining. A wrongful death attorney can help by filing a lawsuit to recover the monetary loss. This does not help the sorrow they feel, but it does provide justice and closure.

Some damages included in a wrongful death lawsuit are:

  • Funeral and burial costs
  • The wages the decedent would have earned until retirement
  • The services the deceased provided in the home, such as doing the taxes, yard work and cleaning
  • Loss of inheritance
  • If the decedent lived for a time (no matter how small) between the incident and their demise –  a survival action can be filed. This pays for medical care and the pain and suffering the decedent endured before death
