Two-Car Collision in Yreka Injures Fort Jones Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a car accident lawyer in Yreka. On Tuesday, March 21, 2017 a two-car collision in Yreka injured a woman from Fort Jones.

What Happened

The accident occurred at about 3:34 p.m. when a woman driving a truck north on South Main Street in Yreka attempted to turn left onto Greenhorn Road. As her vehicle went into the turn, it crossed the path of a Fort Jones woman, and the two vehicles collided. The woman driving the truck was uninjured while the driver of the other vehicle suffered moderate injuries from the collision, according to authorities. The injured woman was transported by the Mt. Shasta Ambulance service to the Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka for treatment.

Major Cause of Car Accidents

Driver distraction is the number one cause of motor vehicle accidents and causes between 25 and 50 percent of collisions, according to the American Automobile Association. While the reasons that a driver becomes distracted are many, major contributors to accidents are texting, rubbernecking, watching the passing scenery and interacting with others in the vehicle.

Drowsy Driving

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving is responsible for about 100,000 crashes per year. Drowsy driving can cause a vehicle to drift over the centerline, vary speed and slow reaction time.

Impaired Driving

Drunk or drugged driving is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents. In 2015, 35,092 people died as a result of drunk drivers, a significant increase over the previous year, according to the NHTSA.

Aggressive Driving

Speeding is a common reason for a motor vehicle accident. A report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that excess speed not only increases the risk of an accident but increases the severity of an accident when it happens. When a motorist increases the speed of a vehicle from 40 mph to 60 mph, the energy that is released in a crash is more than double.

Driving aggressively disregards the safety of others on the road. It can include tailgating, ignoring  yield and stop signs and changing lanes in an unsafe manner. Anger, combined with the size and weight of a motor vehicle, is a dangerous combination.

Inclement Weather

Adverse weather conditions such as rain, sleet, fog, wind or snow cause accidents. Poor visibility, lack of experience driving in adverse conditions, following too closely and other factors can add to the danger of driving in these conditions.

Manufacturer Defects

Manufacturer defects can contribute to car accidents, especially if a vehicle has been recalled. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides a website to check if your motor vehicle has been recalled. It also includes a recall website to check for recalls on manufacturer parts, tires and child safety seats.
