Top Causes of Auto Accidents
I’m Ed Smith, a Yuba City personal injury attorney. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has recently released data that revealed some very important statistics that show the most common causes of California auto accidents. Taking the time to learn about these common causes can help minimize your risk of being involved in an accident.
It is the sad truth that many drivers tend to partake in other activates while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Activities such as:
- Applying makeup
- Using a mobile device
fall under the category of distracted driving and can increase the risk of being involved in an accident due to the driver’s lack of concentration on the road.
Being Unaware of Surroundings
Drivers who are simply not paying attention to their surroundings cause many car accidents. Motorists who don’t pay attention to road conditions, traffic signs or signals, or to other motorists on the road are very dangerous. This type of behavior is different than distracted driving, oftentimes drivers involved in these types of accidents aren’t facing a distraction behind the wheel, they are simply careless and not paying attention.
In California, more than 55,000 speed-related accidents occur every year. Speeding reduces a driver’s reaction time, which makes accidents much more likely to occur. A shorter reaction time mixed with a higher rate of speed typically results in more traumatic injuries.
Vehicle manufacturers are often held accountable for very high standards of safety for each and every vehicle they produce. Sometimes a vehicle part will fail, causing an accident that may result in death or traumatic injuries to the drivers and passengers involved.
Driving Under the Influence
12,000 people are killed yearly in California due to driving while under the influence. I’m not going to sugar coat the wording on that sentence. These tragic accidents can easily be avoided by using another form of transportation after a night of partying.
