Sacramento Highway Accident on I-5 Injures Four People

A Sacramento highway accident along Interstate 5 southbound occurred on February 1 that resulted in four people being transported to a local hospital with possible injuries. The accident was reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as transpiring just north of Cosumnes River Boulevard around 4:23 in the afternoon. It involved a Ford Fusion and two Honda pickup trucks. All of the vehicles ended up in the second and middle lane of the highway, creating a traffic hazard for other motorists. Emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the accident scene to assess injuries to a woman in the early stages of pregnancy, an 11-month-old infant, and two others. Damage to the vehicles was severe enough that all three had to be removed from the highway accident scene by tow trucks.

How a Highway Accident Can Happen

Accidents along higher speed roads are common, and most are caused by driver error. Some of those acts of negligence include:

  • Distracted driving is becoming more of a problem along California highways, even though a driver is not allowed to use hand-held devices. Studies have shown that even using a cell phone hands-free is almost as dangerous and could lead to a highway accident.
  • Speeding is a contributing factor in about 30 percent of all traffic collisions. In addition, the faster the speed, the more likely it is that vehicle occupants will suffer serious injuries or fatalities.
  • Fatigue contributes to traffic collisions because the driver begins to daydream, cannot concentrate, or nods off. By the time the driver becomes alert again, it is too late, and a highway accident has resulted.
  • Drunk driving causes a decline in the ability to see clearly, affects coordination and concentration and reflexes. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, drunk driving caused 10,511 deaths in 2018.
  • Drugged driving is a factor in a highway accident. The term drugs refer to illegal substances as well as over the counter and prescription medicines that affect a motorist’s ability to drive safely. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that about 12.6 million motorists drove under the influence of illicit drugs in 2018 alone.

Seeking Help from an Experienced Sacramento Injury Accident Lawyer

Enlisting the help of an experienced injury lawyer helps you get the compensation you deserve after being injured through someone else’s negligence. In my office, we send investigators to the crash site right away to obtain evidence to support your claim. They check the report issued by the police for mistakes and interview the witnesses. The investigators perform accident reconstruction and look for business and traffic cameras that might have caught the accident on tape. They also look for signs that poor road maintenance might have contributed to the crash. When the evidence has all been collected, it is given over to our lawyers to build a robust case for our client. In some instances, it is used to negotiate on the client’s behalf with the insurance company, while in others, it is presented in civil court.
