Three Killed in Attempted Hit-and-Run

Three Killed in Attempted Hit-and-Run

Tragedy struck on Saturday, May 4, 2019, when three family members lost their lives after their home was struck by a vehicle. The accident took place in Knight’s Landing, a small community between Woodland and Yuba City. Officers of California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that they suspect the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Additionally, reports state that the driver attempted to flee the scene of the accident, but was not successful.

The three individuals were identified by authorities of Sutter County as Jose Alberto Pacheco, Anna Grisalda Pacheco, and Angel Alberto Pacheco-Espinoza, aged 38, 34, and 10 respectively. My sincere condolences are extended to all of the people who have lost a loved one because of this terrible incident.

Crash Detail

Police say that at about 9:45 p.m., a 33-year-old resident of Yuba city was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche heading north on Highway 113. Officers indicated that the man was driving at high speeds when his vehicle entered a curve in the highway. The driver failed to navigate the curve and lost control of his vehicle. The SUV traveled off of the road and collided with a parked trailer home close to Jennings Court.

Accident witnesses reported that the individual attempted to leave the scene of the crash, but was detained by neighbors until police arrived.

Injuries

Officials who responded to the accident stated that the father, mother, and 10-year-old boy were all critically injured and tragically passed away at the scene. Additionally, the Pachecos’ eleven-year-old daughter was found inside of the trailer with critical trauma. She was rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento where she was reportedly scheduled for multiple surgeries. Updates on her condition remain unavailable.

Arrest

The driver was arrested at the scene of the accident on charges of driving under the influence. He was then transported to an emergency room for treatment of moderate injuries. After his brief hospital stay, the driver was booked into the Sutter County Jail with charges of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

According to CHP, an investigator requested a bail of $1 million or no bail. However, the judge set the man’s bail at $300,000. On Sunday, the driver posted bail. Reports indicate that the man has a previous conviction for reckless driving but no major criminal history.
