Details on the DUI Crash That Left Three Injured in the Modesto Area

A Dodge Ram was towing a two-axle flatbed trailer and was parked along the east shoulder of the road. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the pickup truck was parked in front of an auto recycling business and was legally parked on the street. A man that was sitting in the left rear passenger seat exited the vehicle to enter the business.

Officials said not even a minute passed and a driver of a Honda Accord allegedly crashed into the driver’s side of the Dodge. The point of impact on the pickup truck was exactly where the left rear passenger was seated, CHP traffic officers said. A preliminary investigation revealed that the Honda traveled up the flatbed trailer and collided with the rear window of the Dodge.

There were three other parties inside the parked Dodge at the time of the incident. This included the driver and two passengers, with one in the front seat and the other in the right rear seat. Authorities reported that all three parties suffered injuries described as minor, including facial lacerations.

The Honda driver, a 58-year-old Modesto man, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol. Additional information on the car accident in Modesto was not immediately available due to ongoing investigation by the CHP.

Things to Know About Auto Accidents and Personal Injury Claims

Damages in a personal injury case are intended to compensate claimants for the financial losses and intangible harms they have endured due to the car accident. Financial compensation through an insurance settlement or jury award serves to make an injured party whole again. Some of the economic damages recoverable through these cases may include medical expenses, lost wages, and other accident-related losses. Non-economic damages are subjective in nature and may include loss of consortium, lost enjoyment of life, and pain and suffering. Economic damages are fairly straightforward to calculate as they depend on evidence such as receipts and documents, whereas non-economic damages vary in value from case to case.

When an at-fault party’s actions are determined to be particularly egregious, punitive damages may be sought from them. These are not designed to compensate injured parties for the undue harm and losses they have faced. Instead, they are intended to punish the negligent party and serve as a reminder to the community that such conduct will not be tolerated. Some of the cases that may permit punitive damages may include drunk driving and excessive speeding. Recovering all these damages in a personal injury case may be challenging without legal counsel. That is because an experienced accident attorney will know the best way to proceed with the case and guide an injured party through the process.
