Three Hospitalized After Alleged DUI Crash in Davis

An alleged DUI crash in Davis left three people with injuries requiring treatment at a local hospital on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. The accident reportedly involved two vehicles, one of which was traveling the wrong way on a local highway. According to information released by California Highway Patrol (CHP), all three individuals involved in the accident suffered injuries that ranged from minor to moderate in severity. The accident is still under investigation, but the suspected DUI driver has been placed under arrest.

Collision Information

Police reports indicate that the accident happened at about 5:00 a.m. on Highway Interstate 80 close to the UC Davis Campus on the western side of the city. At around this time, a driver noticed a vehicle in the fast lane on the eastbound side of the highway traveling the wrong way. The driver recorded the errant vehicle with a dashcam and immediately contacted CHP.

A few minutes after CHP received the call from the concerned driver, the wrong-way vehicle was involved in a head-on accident. CHP dispatched emergency medical staff to the accident scene right away. When emergency personnel arrived, they found one occupant in the wrong-way vehicle and two in the other and had all three hospitalized. Before the wrong-way driver was released into hospital custody, CHP officers placed him under arrest on a felony charge of DUI causing injury.

Head-On Collisions

Head-on collisions like this one are especially dangerous because both vehicles transfer their full momentum into the crash. According to local vehicle statistics from UC Berkeley, head-on crashes in Yolo County had a fatality rate of 9.13 percent while collisions overall were only fatal 2.64 percent of the time. Similarly, head-on crashes involved serious injuries nearly twice as often. Because there is so much force involved in these accidents, crash survivors are likely to suffer injuries, including cervical sprains, facial fractures or lacerations, chest trauma, spinal cord trauma, and more.

Recovering from an Auto Accident Injury

The process of recovery can be difficult with any injury and accident survivors often face both physical and financial difficulties after being involved in a crash. Being injured can mean needing multiple medical procedures as well as physical therapy, medication, and more. On top of this, suffering an injury is likely to leave you unable to work for a period of time, which may result in a serious loss of income that you are not prepared for.

I believe that people who are injured in car accidents should be able to recover from their injuries without worrying about financial stability. Fortunately, this is why personal injury claims exist. By filing a personal injury claim, collision survivors are often able to hold negligent parties responsible and recover the full amount of compensation they deserve for the losses they’ve suffered.
