Celebrating 4th of July in Thousand Oaks

The 4th of July will be celebrated in style in Thousand Oaks for 2017 at Janss Marketplace and with a free Conejo Community Park concert. I want to wish the people of Thousand Oaks a happy Independence Day celebration and know that all will enjoy this evening of family fun.

Scheduled Events for the 4th

Janss Marketplace has their fireworks event scheduled from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the fireworks display being shot off from the roof. Space Oddity, David Brighton’s tribute band to David Bowie will be performing. A hula hoop contest will be held. Contestants can sign up when they arrive at the event. In addition, a hot dog eating contest will be held. Sign up online at Janss Marketplace to enter. The winner of the contest will receive $500 and a free meal each week for a year at Lucky’s Dog House. A bounce house will also be available for the children to enjoy.

Conejo Community Park will be presenting a concert by the Walking Phoenixes, a tribute band to Johnny Cash, as a part of their Summer in the Park series. The event will be held on the 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The concert will begin with the National Anthem, led by Alana Marie and Jenna Ryin. The Walking Phoenixes will certainly be singing some of Johnny Cash’s top hits. They will also be singing other popular patriotic songs such as “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue” and “Born in the USA.” Those planning to attend the event are encouraged to come early to find a good seat.

Fireworks Accidents

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 11,000 injuries occurred from fireworks in 2016. The average number of emergency room visits in the weeks before during and after Independence Day average about 250. Most of the injuries are burn injuries, which can require hospitalization and an extensive recovery period. Deaths occur also, with four fatalities last year. The CPSC reported that 67 percent of the accidents were caused by fireworks that malfunction.

Liability in an Accident

In California, fireworks are separated into two groups, safe fireworks and dangerous fireworks under California Health and Safety Code 12500-12728 HS. In order to shoot off fireworks labeled under the “dangerous” category, the user must have a special display license. Normally, this type of license is only issued to pyrotechnic specialists during holidays where fireworks are used.

Safe Fireworks Limitations

Safe fireworks are only allowed to be sold during a certain time of year and must be purchased from a licensed retailer. They must also be labeled “State of California, State Fire Marshall Registered Fireworks.” Fireworks lacking this label are illegal. It is also illegal to give or sell “safe” fireworks to those under 16.

Dangerous Fireworks

Giving or selling dangerous fireworks to anyone under the age of 18 is illegal. The list of dangerous fireworks includes firecrackers, rockets, sparklers that measure over 10 inches in length and others.

Injuries Caused by Fireworks

An individual who has been injured or killed as a result of the use of safe or dangerous fireworks may be able to recover damages from the company that manufactured the product if the product was defective. Those who are killed or injured on private or other properties may also be able to recover damages if the fireworks were handled in a negligent manner or laws pertaining to California fireworks were broken. An injury attorney, experienced in wrongful death or traumatic injuries may help by explaining the laws governing fireworks and assist by filing a lawsuit to recover damages.
