Thinking Ahead: The Practice of Safe Driving Habits

While summer is a favorite time of the year, don’t let this sunny season end in a tragedy. Summer presents the opportunities for endless road trips, vacations, concerts, and more. The more outdoor activities we can find, the more often we rely on our car for transportation to and from these events. This is one of the reasons why summer is one of the most treacherous times to be on the road.

Planning Ahead

You can never be too careful when it comes to operating a motor vehicle. Planning ahead is super important. If you are going out to a bar with your friends, make plans to have a designated and sober driver. Drunk driving is a seriously lethal activity, causing almost 1/3 of all traffic deaths in the country. Whether you call an Uber or your sober friend to haul you around, you will be happy that you took the time to consider the safety of others and yourself.

Common Causes of Car Accidents

While there is a wide variety of auto accidents, the most common usually result from road rage, hit and run, drunk driving, being on your phone while driving, and speeding. These types of collisions all have one thing in common – they originate from reckless driving habits. Even though it may seem overemphasized, general car safety should be your first priority from the moment you step into a vehicle. Always put your seatbelt on before you start driving. Have your passengers buckle up as well. Avoid exceeding the posted speed limit. Don’t get caught up with any distractions, whether it be your radio, your phone, or even the passengers in your car. In the year 2015, nearly 3,500 people were killed due to distracted driving. Distracted driving puts not only you, but everyone else on the road in danger.

The good news is that all forms of distracted driving can be minimized, or even avoided completely. Drunk driving, texting while driving, road rage, and speeding are all voluntary decisions made by the driver. So next time you plan on going out and drinking with your friends, give your car keys to a sober friend. Next time you get in the car, turn off your phone and place it somewhere out of your reach. Nearly 391,000 people were injured by distracted driving auto collisions. The safest choice: plan ahead. You just might save a life.
