Choosing a Dog Based on Breed

Choosing a dog for yourself and/or your family can feel overwhelming to some. There are many folks who whole-heartedly embrace the concept of “adopt don’t shop” and believe that every dog should be rescued from a shelter.  While that is a noble idea, shelters often do not have much variety in terms of breeds, and some families want a specific breed for their pet.  Whether you are interested in shopping the shelters or looking for a reputable breeder for your new pet, below are some of the most popular dog breeds along with their personality traits.

Dachshund

One look at a Dachshund, and it is easy to see why they are often called “weiner dogs.”  The long and low body shape reminds one of a frankfurter. In addition to its somewhat comical appearance, the Dachshund is a friendly, happy breed that is great for families with children.

Rottweiler

For a number of years, the Rottweiler was thought of as a “scary” breed.  Increasingly, they are becoming a very popular family dog.  The breed is confident, intelligent, loyal, and hard-working.  They make great service and therapy dogs, as well as wonderful companions overall.

Poodle

Poodles, and their popular hybrids, such as the labradoodle (labrador and poodle mix), have regularly topped lists of well-loved pets.  This is one of the top dog breeds known for intelligence.  The poodle coat is low-shedding, which makes the breed a good choice for those with dander allergies.  These smart dogs excel in obedience training.

Boxer

Boxers are loyal companions – they love being around their people.  They are instinctively protective and powerfully built, but not prone to aggression.

Yorkshire Terrier

Maybe the most popular pet toy breed, Yorkshire Terriers are tiny.  Their personalities have been described as energetic, investigative, and determined.  Because of their size and portability, the “Yorkie” is a perfect breed for those who like to take their pet everywhere.

Beagle

A cheerful and spunky breed, the adorable Beagle has been a popular family breed for ages.  In fact, Snoopy from the Peanuts gang was a beagle.  Beagles love walks, the outdoors, and their human families.

Golden Retriever

When you picture quintessential American pets, one of the first that comes to mind is probably the affable Golden Retriever, always one of the most popular dog breeds.  Because of their strong work ethic and intelligence, Goldens are regularly employed as service and guide dogs.  They also make great hunting companions.

German Shepherd

Because German Shepherds are most recognizable as police, military, and guard dogs throughout the world, one may think they are aggressive and vicious.  This, however, is not the case.  The breed, when well trained, is loving and approachable by nature. German Shepherds do have a tendency to be protective of their family, so, as will all family dogs, socializing and training are important.

Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers are consistently ranked as one of America’s favorite dog breeds.  It is often said that they evoke a sense of kindness with their eyes.  They are trustworthy companions with a playful nature, and their intelligence makes them easily trainable.
