Impaired Driving: What You Need to Know

About 29 people are killed daily in the U.S. from motor vehicle accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers. This can be converted into one death every 50 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes is a whopping sum of over $44 billion. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • There were 10,497 deaths in 2016 from alcohol-impaired driving accidents, accounting for 28 percent of the total traffic accident deaths in the U.S.
  • Of the 1,233 traffic-related deaths recorded in 2016 among children from 0 – 14, 17 percent involved a driver under the influence of alcohol.
  • Over one million arrests were made against drivers caught under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. That only accounts for 1 percent of the 111 million self-reported experiences of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year.
  • Excluding alcohol, drugs (both legal and illegal) are involved in 16 percent of all motor vehicle accidents.
