Garden Highway Exit Ramp Site of Fatal T-Bone Crash

A T-bone crash in Nicholaus, south of Yuba City, killed one man when he missed a turn to northbound Highway 99 at the on-ramp. The collision occurred in Sutter County on the ramp from Garden Highway to 99 around 7:00 p.m. According to the accident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver, a Marysville man, age 61, was in the left-hand lane of the ramp in a Ford Fusion when his vehicle crossed over in front of a Dodge Ram 1500.

T-Bone Crash Traps Driver in Vehicle

The Ford was broadsided in the driver’s side door in the collision. The T-bone crash trapped the Ford driver inside the vehicle. However, the CHP stated that when they arrived, it was determined the man was not breathing. Police administered CPR until the arrival of medical personnel. Medics pronounced the man dead around 8:00 p.m.

Alleged Intoxication May Have Led to Fatal Crash

Officers believe that the driver of the Ford had been drinking when the accident occurred. The pickup driver and a passenger riding in the Ford were transported to a hospital with reports of pain. Another passenger in the pickup, a juvenile, was uninjured.

Traffic Halted While Investigation Is Conducted

Traffic along northbound Highway 99 remained closed for several hours as the CHP traffic accident unit conducted an investigation. When the deceased man’s family has been notified, his identity will be released by the Sutter County Coroner’s Office.

Drunk Driving and Accidents

Drunk driving continues to be a nationwide problem, leading to many serious accidents each year. Wrongful death claims involve complex legal issues, so it is essential to consult with an experienced lawyer who knows the state’s laws and can help a family get maximum compensation for their loss. Under California law, families of those whose loved ones have died in an accident caused by someone else’s negligence may recover:

  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Loss of expected financial support, including wages, until the decedent has reached retirement age
  • The surviving spouse can recover the loss of consortium, comfort, and assistance.
  • Protection or attention that children could have received from the decedent
  • Loss of inheritance due to premature death
  • Household assistance expenses, such as childcare and housekeeping services
  • Punitive damages may also be requested when the defendant behaves negligently or maliciously. These damages are designed to punish rather than compensate for losses. A lawyer can help determine whether a case is eligible for punitive damages.
