SUV Causes Apartment Gas Leak

I’m Ed Smith, a South Sacramento personal injury attorney. An SUV crash caused a scary evacuation for residents at a local apartment complex in the South Sacramento area on the morning of Friday, November 4, 2016. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in the accident.

What Happened?

A man, presumed to be in his sixties, was behind the wheel of his Ford Explorer SUV along Franklin Boulevard at approximately 3:15 am. The man reported to authorities that he could not remove his foot from the gas pedal because it got stuck. For this reason, it caused him to lose control of his vehicle and crash into the Phoenix Park Apartments at the block for 7400 Franklin Boulevard.

What Type of Damage?

The front-end impact from the SUV caused severe damage to a row of gas lines for the complex. The back-end of the SUV caused damage to a garage and a staircase for the apartment. The driver of the SUV survived the accident, however, his vehicle had to be towed away from the scene due to the amount of damage sustained from the impact of the collision.

Emergency Evacuation

The Sacramento Fire Department reported to the scene of the accident when they encountered a strong odor of gas. Fire crews immediately turned the gas off and prompted the apartment residents for evacuation. For this reason, it ensured the safety of the residents and prevented burn and lung injuries from the damaged gas lines. Crews from PG&E arrived to repair the gas meters.

What To Do In A Gas Leak Situation

No one ever wants to experience being involved in a gas leak situation. However, it is best to review the following safety steps in case you ever find yourself in one:

  • Alert everyone in the vicinity and immediately leave the area away from the gas odor.
  • Do not use any sources that may act as an ignition to a gas leak such as matches, vehicles, cell phones and flash lights until you move to a reasonable and safe distance away from the area.
  • Get to a safe place and then call 911 and contact PG&E for gas leak assistance.
