A 37-year-old Merced man was behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Tahoe along Juniper Avenue near Shaffer Road and Kadota Avenue at approximately 9:08 pm. The man was spotted by the Atwater Police Department when his vehicle had collided with several trash cans placed on the side of the roadway and a parked vehicle. When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the man, the man reversed his vehicle and crashed into the police car. The Chevrolet continued in reverse past Shaffer Road and struck a house along the 100 block of Kadota Avenue. The impact of the collision caused the home to sustain major damage. It is not yet known whether an inspector has flagged the home for unsafe structural damage.

Suspected Drunk Driver Arrested

Investigators indicated that the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe showed signs of intoxication, including bloodshot and watery eyes and emitted a strong odor of alcoholic beverage. When authorities conducted a blood-alcohol level test on the driver, his level allegedly measured at .20, more than two times the legal limit of .08. The man was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of driving on a suspended driver’s license, driving under the influence alcohol resulting in damage and hit-and-run. The man’s bail has been set to more than $8,000.
