Suisun Children Receive Bicycles

I’m Ed Smith, a Suisun car accident lawyer. On December 25, 2017, during the fourth annual Christmas Day “I Love My City” toy giveaway event, more than 60 Suisun children received new bicycles thanks to the generosity of local businessman, Alfie Hardwick.

The event was sponsored by local church groups in cooperation with the Toys for Tots program at nearby Travis Air Force Base. The event gave away presents to over 100 children ranging in age from 1 to 11 years old while parents enjoyed live music, coffee, and doughnuts.

Bike Safety

With at least 60 new young bike riders on the city’s roads, it’s a better time than ever to take a look at some Suisun bicycle accident statistics and think about how to ride safely in order to avoid serious accidents and traumatic injuries.

In Suisun alone, there have been 18 reported injury-causing bicycle accidents over the past eight years (2008-2016). Of these collisions, 7 involved serious injuries and 1 left a cyclist with fatal trauma. Moreover, bicycle accidents accounted for nearly 7 percent of all accidents in Suisun during this time period.

Biking Smart

When bicycling, it is important to study and follow traffic laws for various reasons. The most important reason is that motorists expect cyclists to follow the rules of the road. If a cyclist is not biking in a way that drivers are able to predict, this may significantly affect a driver’s ability to avoid a collision.

Common Bike Crash Locations and Times

There are a few areas in Suisun in which auto accidents involving bicyclists occur more frequently. Most of Suisun’s reported bicycle accidents have taken place along Highway 12 between Beck Avenue and Walters Road, with 8 reported accidents. Additionally, 4 bicycle accidents resulting in injuries also occurred along Sunset Avenue between Railroad Avenue and Highway 12. A majority of these accidents happened during daylight hours between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Biking Injuries

Bicyclists tend to experience specific types of injuries more often when compared to other types of collisions due to their lack of protection against a motor vehicle. Injuries that are common in bike collisions include damage to the spinal cord, traumatic brain injuries, simple or complex bone fractures to the arms and hands, and internal injuries that may result in heavy bleeding and possibly damage to organ tissue. When a bicyclist has been involved in an accident, it is important to always seek immediate medical treatment to evaluate the nature of their injuries.
