Stockton Woman Killed in Accident in Livermore

A woman from Stockton was killed in a single-vehicle accident in an unincorporated area of Alameda County just north of Livermore on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. The fatal car accident occurred on North Livermore Avenue near Interstate 580 just south of Hartman Road at approximately 5:25 p.m. Julie Ownbey, 52, of Stockton, and a teacher at August Knodt Elementary School in the Manteca Unified School District, was driving a 2006 Lexus ES 330 southbound on N Livermore Ave., when she reportedly lost control of her vehicle, exited the roadway, and struck a barbed-wire fence.

Upon striking the fence, the Lexus overturned into a field just east of the road, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported. Sadly, Ms. Ownbey was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover collision and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Details surrounding the cause of the solo vehicle crash are unknown as an investigation is underway by CHP traffic officials.

Loss of a Loved One

The loss of a close relative in a traumatic, sudden accident is devastating for surviving family members. The pain of a loved one’s death is never easy to come to terms with. When the loss occurred unexpectedly, survivors are left to pick up the pieces with the many expenses and costs involved. California law provides a means for the family to recover compensatory damages from negligent parties who are liable for causing a loved one’s death due to recklessness or negligence. Our Stockton wrongful death attorneys can help your family by handling all aspects of your wrongful death claim while you all are coping with this tragic loss.

Types of Compensation Awarded in a Wrongful Death Claim

Compensation in a wrongful death case reflects the intangible losses and financial costs inflicted on survivors. For instance, it is possible for surviving family members to claim the following economic and non-economic damages:

  • Costs of a funeral and burial
  • Medical expenses for end-of-life medical care
  • Mental anguish
  • Loss of a loved one’s companionship, protection, care, and guidance

Coping with the loss of a close relative can be overwhelming, but it is essential to protect your interests and legal options for recovery by retaining an experienced wrongful death attorney in Stockton. How an Attorney Can Help After a Wrongful Death Car Accident

One of the many challenges in a wrongful death lawsuit is that the loved one who was killed is no longer alive to provide their account of the fatal motor vehicle collision, so the at-fault party may be the only eyewitness to the crash. This may make it easier for the negligent party and their insurance company to dispute liability by claiming that the decedent was partially or fully at-fault for causing or contributing to the collision, which under California comparative fault law may reduce the value of a wrongful death car accident case.

At our law firm, our experienced Stockton personal injury attorneys will work diligently to conduct an independent investigation of the crash, determine liability for the cause of death, and negotiate with insurance companies on behalf of surviving family members. We understand the family’s need for time to recover from their loss and financial help, and our legal team strives to achieve both fair compensation and justice through our efforts.
