Modesto Fiery Crash Kills Two

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto personal injury lawyer. A sheriff’s deputy and a community service officer were driving in Modesto during the morning of Saturday, May 13, 2017. Unfortunately, the two were involved in an accident that caused both to suffer fatal injuries.

What Happened?

A deputy for the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, 41-year-old Jason Garner, was driving with 42-year-old Raschel Johnson, a community service officer for the department. The two were proceeding northbound along Crows Landing Road in the vicinity of Seventh Street to respond to a burglary call at about 8:19 am. For unknown reasons, the patrol SUV crashed into the Modesto Auto Wreckers building near South Seventh Street. The collision caused the patrol vehicle to catch fire, with the two inside. Sadly, both officers were pronounced deceased at the scene by authorities.

It also shows a heart-wrenching procession of  patrol vehicles leading the way as the bodies of the fallen officers left the crash site. Multiple law enforcement agencies from throughout Stanislaus County gathered to honor the two for their legacy of public service.

What Caused the Crash?

It is still too soon to determine what caused this terrible crash. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department stated that the crash is still in the early stages of investigation.

Public Memorial Services

The loved ones of Deputy Garner and Officer Johnson have set up public memorial services on two separate days. The service for Deputy Garner will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the CrossPoint Community Church at 1301 12th Street in Modesto. The service for Officer Johnson will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the House Church at 1601 Coffee Road in Modesto. Memorial service attendees are advised to arrive early because parking will be limited.

Two Lives Forever Remembered

Deputy Jason Garner was a nine-year veteran of the department. Officer Raschel Johnson was with the department for fifteen years. The crash took Deputy Garner away from his wife and four children and Officer Johnson left behind three children. The two will be forever remembered by their loved ones for their sacrifice in the line of duty.

We extend our condolences to the family members of the two officers who passed away in this tragic accident.
