Early Spring has Sprung

Sacramento has enjoyed an early spring.  The beautiful weather wakes us from our winter hibernation, and we begin to seek activities outside of our homes.  Below are some upcoming spring events in the Fair Oaks area.

Root Cellar (Sacramento Genealogy Society) Spring Seminar

Saturday, March 20, 2020, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at 11427 Fair Oaks Boulevard in Fair Oaks.

Guest Speaker Information

Joshua Taylor, President of the New York Genealogical and Historical Society, will be the featured speaker for this annual Spring Seminar. Mr. Taylor is a co-host of the PBS series “Genealogy Roadshow” as well as a consultant and researcher for “Who Do You Think You Are.” His interest in family history and genealogy research began when he was just 10 years old.

Mr. Taylor will discuss several genealogy topics, including the use of online library catalogs which he deems the best-kept secret of genealogists

Registration costs are $30.00 for Root Cellar members and $45.00 for non-members.  Attendees must register by March 14, 2020, and early registration is encouraged due to high interest.

A raffle will be held for incredible gift baskets with raffle ticket sales starting at 8:15 a.m.

Art Workshop for Spring Break (Kids 5 to 12 years)

Dates/Location

Monday, April 6 through April 10, 2020, at The Art Box, 8920 Sunset Avenue, Suite G in Fair Oaks.

There are two-time slots available for this art camp: 9:00 – noon ($175) or 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ($250)  This is a drop-off event.

Children are provided with a variety of art materials and mediums and will be guided as they create.  Some of the projects will be: making slime, painting, needle felting, and sewing.

Make a Spring Wreath

Saturday, April 11, 2020, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at The Treasured Home, 9906 Fair Oaks Boulevard in Fair Oaks, which is next to Bob’s Cycle Center.

The Treasured Home is a furniture painting studio and vintage market.  This class will utilize Fusion Mineral Paints as well as new stamps and transfers.

Shangri La Pop-Up

Saturday, April 18, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Shangri-La, 7960 Winding Way in Fair Oaks.

Shangri-La is a distinctive restaurant in Fair Oaks that serves contemporary, seasonal American food and hand-crafted cocktails.  The design is modernist and reminiscent of a Palm Springs resort.  The grounds feature fire pits and bocce ball courts.

This afternoon pop-up event will take place on Shangri-La’s dog-friendly patio.  There will be a few local vendors on-site, and guests are encouraged to enjoy brunch or an early dinner.

The pop-up is a free event, and no tickets are required.

Fair Oaks Sun Run

This annual event (sometimes referred to as the Fair Oaks Chicken Run) will take place on May 3, 2020, at 7997 California Avenue in Old Fair Oaks Village.  Start times for the races are as follows:

  • 8:00 a.m. is the start of the ¼ mile(for kids five and under) or ½ mile (for ages six through nine) races
  • 8:30 a.m. – Non-competitive two-mile Rooster Ramble
  • 8:30 a.m. Five Mile Chicken Run/Walk

All events begin in Old Fair Oaks at Village Park.  The five-mile course travels through the lovely residential neighborhoods of Old Fair Oaks before veering off for a loop near Sailor Bar.  The course consists of equal parts of a dirt trail and paved roads.  There are four infamous hills, including THE BEAST, so be sure to add some incline to your training programs!
