Semi-Truck Rollover in Eureka Hospitalizes One

Semi-Truck Rollover in Eureka

On Monday, May 18, 2020, a semi-truck rollover in Eureka left one person with moderate injuries. This accident marks the second time in a week that a big-rig carrying a full load of peat moss overturned on a city road in Eureka at the same intersection. The injured truck driver was reportedly hospitalized following the crash but was expected to fully recover from his injuries. The cause of this accident is being investigated at this time.

Accident Details

The crash took place shortly before noon at the intersection of I and 5th Streets just outside the parking lot of Best Western. While the events leading up to the crash were not reported, pictures of the accident scene show the blue big-rig and trailer rolled onto its driver’s side partly inside of the parking lot and partly in the road.

Response

Staff from City Ambulance, the Eureka Police Department (EPD), Caltrans, Humboldt Towing, and Humboldt Bay Fire all assisted with responding to the accident. Responders reportedly found the big-rig driver trapped inside the cab of his vehicle. After extricating him, medical officials determined that he had suffered injuries to his chest and had him driven by ambulance to an area hospital.

Although the fuel tank of the truck did not spring a leak, Humboldt Bay Fire reported that the big-rig was leaking “various automotive fluids” that eventually reached nearby drains. Responders worked quickly to deploy absorbent materials to contain the leak and reached out to Caltrans Environment Health experts to prevent possible exposure of the chemicals to Eureka’s waterway.

Investigation

As accident investigations continue, officials have remarked that the similarity between this accident and another collision that took place the prior Wednesday is “uncanny.” EPD indicated that the two accidents happened at approximately the same time of day under damp road conditions.

EPD has reported that both accidents are under investigation, but that the first collision may have been partially caused by speed and load weight. EPD clarified that, while the truck may not have been speeding, it could have been traveling at an unsafe speed for the conditions of the road.

Truck Accidents and Liability

Accidents that involve large commercial trucks can easily cause very serious injuries. Because of their massive size, big-rigs present a serious risk to roadway users, even in low-speed collisions. Trucking companies are very aware of these risks and usually act quickly to defend their interests by mitigating their liability for the accident. This can prevent injured parties from obtaining the compensation they deserve for their damages.

In order to make sure you are able to obtain the payments you need to recover personally and financially after being hurt in a trucking accident, it’s important to call a skilled Eureka personal injury lawyer right away.
