State Route 15 Site of Semi-Truck Accident Involving Four Other Vehicles

A semi-truck that struck multiple vehicles near Mission Valley on January 3 prompted the closing of all the State Route 15 lanes heading northbound. The accident occurred at State Route 15 and Interstate 8 around 2:18 p.m. Dispatch with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that around four cars were struck.

Investigators Into the Crash Determining Cause

A SigAlert was issued while an investigation into the cause of the multiple-vehicle collision was conducted and the scene cleared. The area had experienced showers since the night before, however, investigators had not yet determined whether this was a factor in the semi-truck accident. Because details were not released, it is uncertain whether injuries were reported in the collision.

A Big Rig Poses a Number of Challenges

It is not easy to drive a big rig. Their size, handling and necessary training make them significantly different from normal cars. The braking and acceleration systems on big rigs are different, so getting used to them can be challenging and lead to a semi-truck accident.

Moreover, big rig drivers must remain aware of speed limits and road conditions at all times since they have longer stopping distances than cars. Managing tight corners, narrow roads and other vehicles is another challenge of driving a big rig. In addition to changing lanes, making tight turns and entering intersections, drivers who operate these vehicles must take extra precautions due to their size to avoid a semi-truck accident.

Company and Trucker Liability in an Accident That Was Caused by Negligence

Truckers and their companies may be liable for injuries and fatalities under various areas of law if they are at fault for an accident. It is possible for a company as well as the driver to be liable for negligence, failure to comply with state and federal laws, lack of maintenance or even failing to comply with a traffic regulation, depending on the circumstances of the accident.

The negligent trucker or their company may be found liable for a semi-truck accident along with other parties. A number of parties could be liable for damages in these instances. Injury claims may also be pursued against a manufacturer of defective parts or a shipping company that failed to properly load the truck, in addition to the trucker and/or their employer.
