Second Crash Kills Delhi Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto car accident attorney. Two chain-reaction crashes occurred during the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Sadly, one person passed away in the accident due to the fatal extent of their injuries.

What Happened?

A woman was behind the wheel of her 1992 Honda traveling northbound along Montpelier Road in Denair. For unknown reasons, the woman veered her vehicle into the southbound lane for Montpelier Road and into oncoming traffic. The motorist of a 2008 Kia was identified as 35-year-old Estaban Marquez from Modesto. Marquez was approaching the woman’s vehicle in the southbound lane. Marquez attempted to avoid the crash by hitting his brakes and swerving his vehicle to the right. However, his attempt was unsuccessful and resulted in a head-on collision.

First Crash Blocks Roadway

The impact of the first automobile accident caused Marquez’s Kia come to a rest along the dirt shoulder of Montpelier Road. The impact also caused the woman’s Honda to become disabled, coming to a stop facing the east direction, and blocking the northbound lane of Montpelier Road in the vicinity of Monte Vista Avenue. While in the intersection, the woman got out and was standing by the driver side of her vehicle.

First Crash Causes Second Crash

A motorist was driving in his 1994 Toyota northbound along Montpelier Road. The California Highway Patrol reported that the man was approaching the intersection at an estimated speed of 45 to 50 miles per hour. The man, identified as 26-year-old Jose Barrajas from Winton, observed that the position of the woman’s Honda was blocking his lane. However, it was too late and he could not avoid the Honda and struck its passenger side. According to the California Highway Patrol, the impact of the second crash propelled the Honda north, knocked the woman to the ground, and the car came to a rest atop the woman.

What Types of Injuries?

The first accident caused the motorist of the 2008 Kia, Estaban Marquez to sustain major injuries. Marquez was transported to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. The woman driving in the 1992 Honda was taken to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto to be treated for her injuries where she passed away shortly after. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office later identified the woman as 44-year-old Socorro Hernandez. The condition of the driver in the 1994 Toyota, Jose Barrajas, has not been released at this time.

What Caused the Accident?

The cause of the accident has not been revealed by authorities from the California Highway Patrol at this time. However, traffic collision reports typically take up to 2 weeks to be generated. Sometimes, traffic collision reports take longer if the accident included multiple parties and serious injuries. Sometimes a traffic collision report may be inconclusive or contain errors regarding cause of a crash.

Independent Investigation

It is important to contact an experienced auto accident attorney who can take the time to properly investigate the sequence of events leading up to a crash in order to determine fault. An attorney can help victims recover compensation for their injuries (or wrongful death) from an at fault driver.
