A bus driver was transporting young students on the morning of Monday, November 28, 2016. Suddenly the unexpected took place when the school bus became involved in a multi-vehicle collision in Santa Maria. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in this accident that could have easily resulted in traumatic injuries and/or wrongful death.

What Happened?

A school bus carrying 56 children was traveling westbound along Battle Road in Santa Maria. A motorist was traveling northbound along Blosser Road in their Kia SUV. For reasons that have not been determined by investigators, the Kia SUV was struck by the school bus at the intersection of Battle Road and Blosser Road. The following video demonstrates the serious collision that caused significant damage to six vehicles including the school bus. Maggie White, a spokeswoman for the Santa Maria-Bonita School District, stated that the reported injuries declared by the three students consisted of a sore neck, a knee injury and a lacerated forehead. The Santa Maria-Bonita School District personnel have reason to be thankful. No one lost their life in this tragic school bus accident after colliding in the intersection sending three students and two adults to the hospital.

What Types of Injuries?

The crash caused five people to go to the hospital, three of which were children. The driver of the bus along with the bus driver’s aid were evaluated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The motorist of the Kia was reported to be in stable condition after the crash. Three students that were riding in the bus sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to the Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria. The hospital later released the three students.

Who Caused the Accident?

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating into the accident. Officials are looking into who caused the accident and who ran the red light. CHP suspects that the motorist in the Kia may have ran the red light and caused the accident. Both the Kia and the bus were traveling 35 mph. Ultimately, CHP urges drivers on the roadway to be patient and always keep in mind that a yellow traffic light indicates motorists to approach the intersection at a slower speed and not accelerate to make it through the light.

Increase in Bus Accidents Raises Concern

Throughout the past few months, there has been a significant increase in bus accidents. Although bus accidents are less common than automobile accidents, they can be very serious in nature and may cause devastating injuries. Motorists traveling on the roadway should take extra precaution while driving in the vicinity of buses, especially those carrying young students.
