What Area of the Highway is Closed?
The interstate is closed down beginning at the Highway 132 offramp. Motorists can follow a detour over to northbound Highway 33 and then back onto northbound Interstate 5.
How Long Will it Take to Make Repairs?
Repairs could be completed by Thursday afternoon, according to officials.
Who Discovered the Sinkhole?
Caltrans crews discovered the sinkhole while working on the roadway around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016.
Although the sinkhole started off relatively small, about a foot in diameter, it quickly expanded as crews began digging for the cause of the sinkhole.
By Tuesday night, the sinkhole reached across one full lane, half of another lane and onto a portion of the highway shoulder.
What Caused the San Joaquin County Sinkhole?
Officials think the sinkhole may have started from a leak in nearby orchard irrigation line.
Other possibilities are being investigated as crews crush concrete and dig for answers.
The official cause of the sinkhole has not been identified, Caltrans said.
Was Anyone Hurt as a Result of the Sinkhole?
Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of the sinkhole.
Crews will continue to work around the clock until the sinkhole is fixed. This includes filling the hole and repaving the highway.
