Accident Involving Dump Truck on Highway 99 Kills Sacramento Woman

Distracted driving allegedly led to an August 21 highway accident with a dump truck that took the life of a young woman. The crash occurred along Highway 99, close to the junction for Highway 50 in Sacramento.

The deceased woman, identified as Araceli Giselle Ahumada Velazquez, age 22, was riding as a passenger in a Toyota that was heading north toward the Oak Park interchange. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with the costs of final resting arrangements.

Reportedly Distracted Driver Hits Back of Dump Truck

According to the report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver, a male, age 22, was reported as distracted and didn’t notice that traffic ahead had slowed. The Toyota crashed into the left rear of the dump truck in front of it. Officers with the CHP as well as firefighters with the Sacramento Fire Department, attempted CPR to save the woman’s life. Both the driver of the Toyota, who suffered serious injuries in the crash, and the young woman were taken to a hospital.

Driver Suffers Major Injuries, Children Unharmed in Accident

Upon arrival at the hospital, the woman was declared deceased. In addition to the adults, a toddler and infant were riding in the vehicle, however, they were not injured in the collision. An investigation into the cause of the fatal accident with the commercial truck is underway by the CHP traffic crash unit.

Distracted Driving and Accidents

Distracted driving is now a major cause of all types of traffic collisions, including those involving a big commercial vehicle such as a large commercial truck. However, if the traffic ahead experiences a slowdown, the drivers behind might not have enough time to stop in order to avoid a collision, especially at highway speeds.

Normally, a driver who strikes another vehicle from the rear is found to be at fault in an accident. However, this is not always true. If the dump truck driver in front stopped short, had non-working brake lights or other maintenance problems occurred, they might be found to at least share the fault in a collision occurring from the rear
