Sacramento Samsung Phone Catches Fire

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento burn injury attorney. There have been many reports in the news about the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7. The smartphone has brought safety concerns regarding its battery overheating and catching fire. A frightening situation occurred in Sacramento where a Note 7 phone burst into flames. The victim announced the story on Sunday, October 9, 2016. Luckily, the Note 7 customer survived the defective product.

What Happened?

Gita Halderman attended a special event with an author introducing his new cookbook in Sacramento. Halderman turned off her Samsung Galaxy Note 7 replacement phone so that it would not distract others in the audience. However, she heard her phone making a hissing sound, and it began to catch fire in her hand. She described the height of the flames as 6 to 12 inches high. On October 10, 2016, the Samsung company issued a global recall for all consumers to return their smartphones and for all retailers to stop the sales of the Galaxy Note 7. The recall was issued for cases similar to Halderman’s and has created an investigation conducted by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

What Types of Injuries?

Halderman suffered a burn injury to her hand due to her smartphone catching fire. Thankfully, she did not sustain severe injuries in the accident and described her burn injury as minor. She has since shared her story on Facebook to alert her friends and family. Fox 40 News found her story online through social media and aired a segment about it.
