Sacramento Motorcycle Crash Injury

Sacramento Motorcycle Crash Injury. A motorcycle crash injury occurred in the early hours of October 18, 2018, in South Sacramento when the rider collided with a motor vehicle. The motorcyclist was reported as down in one of the westbound lanes of Lincoln Highway at the interchange east of Howe Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a medical emergency vehicle was summoned to take the rider to a hospital. As of this time, no information has been released on the motorcyclist’s identity or condition.

The accident happened just before 8:00 in the morning when a Toyota Corolla and the motorcycle crashed. An additional driver pulled over to the center divider to report the accident to the CHP. All of the vehicles were quickly removed to the center divider, and a tow truck was summoned to remove the motorcycle.

Motorcycle Crash Injury Risk

Motor vehicles are constructed of metal and fiberglass, which gives the occupants a measure of protection in a crash. Motorcycle riders, on the other hand, have little to no protection except their clothing and a helmet. This places a motorcyclist at considerably higher risk for serious injuries if they are involved in a crash with another vehicle. Some of the reasons that motorcyclists are involved in collisions include:

  • Riding without a license can be dangerous and not only because it is against the law. California licensing requires that a motorcyclist take a skills test and a knowledge test, both of which are important to ride safely. Being licensed is an important way to avoid a motorcycle crash injury.
  • Motorcyclists are less visible because of the bike’s smaller size. One common remark made by motorists after a collision with a motorcycle is that they did not see it. Visibility can be improved by wearing brighter colors and using a bike that isn’t black, especially after dark.
  • All California motorcyclists are required to wear helmets. They help protect against head injuries, which are commonly fatal. However, helmets must be approved by the Department of Transportation, and if a rider has been in an accident where damage was caused to the helmet, it should be replaced.
  • Speeding is a common problem with both motorcyclists and other drivers. Traveling at speeds above the limit increases the severity of a motorcycle crash injury and risk of death in a collision.
  • Taking a safety course is required for riders under 21, however, intermediate-level riders also benefit. Learning evasive maneuvers and how to handle a bike in an emergency can help keep a rider safe. In addition, it may lower the cost of insurance.
  • Lane splitting is legal in California but can be dangerous if it is done recklessly. Only lane split in good weather and when traffic is moving slowly. Additionally, don’t go over 10 mph faster than the other traffic.
