Sacramento Corvette Rollover Crash

My name is Ed Smith, a Sacramento personal injury lawyer. An accident during the evening of April 5 in Sacramento along Interstate 80 resulted in major damages to at least one of the vehicles. It is unknown at this time what injuries were suffered by the drivers or any other occupants of the vehicles.

What Happened?

An early report issued by a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol states that the rollover crash occurred near the off-ramp for Madison Avenue along eastbound I-80 at about 8:57 at night. According to the CHP, two black vehicles, a pickup and Chevy Corvette, crashed, causing the Corvette to roll. The result of the crash blocked two freeway lanes. Major damage to one vehicle was reported, and it is unknown how much damage was caused to the other.

Accident Fatalities May Be Increasing

Accidents along Interstate 80 commonly occur. Preliminary data released by the National Safety Council indicates that up to 40,000 individuals died in motor vehicle accidents in 2016, which is a 6-percent jump over the previous year. If these numbers are confirmed, it would mean a nationwide increase of about 14 percent since 2014, the largest increase in over five decades. The state of California showed a 13-percent increase in motor-vehicle fatalities in 2016 as compared to 2015 but a 19-percent increase from 2014 through 2016. The preliminary number of individuals who sought medical treatment as a result of a motor vehicle accident increased in 2016 by 7 percent over the previous year to 4.6 million people nationwide.

Tips for Driving Safety

However, a driver can increase travel safety by following a few tips. Drugged or drunk driving, which can cause judgment to be impaired and reaction time slowed, claims many lives every year. Having a designated driver or using a taxi or other service when out drinking only makes sense. A driver who causes the death of another individual due to the consumption of drugs or alcohol may be held liable for a wrongful death action. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2015, 3,477 individuals lost their lives due to distracted driving, which is a form of reckless driving. Distracted driving may encompass many areas, from looking away from the road, to fiddling with a radio or accessing GPS. Obeying the rules of the road is an important part of staying safe from accidents with speed as the number-one culprit. The faster a vehicle is traveling, the more serious the results of an accident.

Damages Recoverable Due to a Personal Injury

When someone has been injured because of another’s negligence, general damages are recoverable such as lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. In certain circumstances, punitive damages are also awarded, such as criminal negligence due to a drunk driver.
