Roseville Dog Bite Injury

The risk of a Roseville dog bite injury is high as California was named the number one state for injuries of this type in 2018. According to State Farm, dog bites accounted for almost 14 percent of the claims paid out by the company in 2017. Nationwide, State Farm paid out for 3,600 injuries caused by dogs in 2017 to the tune of $132 million. In California, there were 488 claims for dog bite injuries paid, totaling $18.7 million.

California Dog Bite Law

California Civil Code 3342 states that the owner of a dog has a financial responsibility when their pet injures someone on public property or when in a home lawfully. Police and military dogs are exempt from this law when they are on duty. Being on a private property extends to guests and visitors, along with people who come to the door such as a mailman. This law does not apply to those who are on a property unlawfully such as trespassers.

Results of a Roseville Dog Bite Injury

The amount of pressure exerted by a Roseville dog bite injury can depend on the size of the dog. Some exert more than 450 pounds per square inch of pressure, which causes serious damage and crush injuries as well as lacerations and punctures. A less serious Roseville dog bite injury can still be dangerous because of the bacteria found in the animal’s mouth and diseases it might carry. These can include:

  • Rabies is the disease that frightens people most when they are bitten by an animal in the Roseville area, especially since there was a rabid bat scare recently. Rabies can be passed through a dog that is unvaccinated and carries the disease. Rabies results in high fever, convulsions, and death if left untreated.
  • Pasteurella is a bacteria that attacks the skin, which causes cellulitis. Pasteurella caused by a dog bite can arise within 24 hours through either a scratch or bite. Cellulitis can result in pneumonia, arthritis, meningitis and other complications, causing costly medical bills, lost time from work and other expenses.
  • Tetanus is a lower risk if people are vaccinated, but some people do not get a booster for many years. Tetanus is a disease with no cure once caught and frequently results in death. It causes severe body spasms, difficulty swallowing and stiffness in the abdomen, neck, and jaw.
  • Streptococcal infections start with a sore throat, swollen tissues and rash and can progress to adversely affect the lungs, blood, and valves in the heart.
  • Staphylococcal infections often start as a boil or abscess and without appropriate treatment can progress to toxic shock or cellulitis.
  • Capnocytophaga is an infection that can occur up to two weeks following a dog bite injury. This serious disease can cause death in about one-third of those who develop it, while others may develop complications such as gangrene or kidney failure.
